Bioplastic blends for tunable and complete ocean degradation.

Bio-made and biodegradable

Nereid Biomaterials engineers bioplastics proven to fully degrade in the marine environment, leaving no microplastics behind. Using a polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) base made by bacteria or plants, our proprietary formulations speed or slow degradation for different use cases–a previously unheard-of feature in plastics. We perform rigorous testing on material properties and degradation rate, both in lab and in-ocean, to ensure the functionality of replacing plastic with our biomaterial in equipment and to verify complete degradation.

Living materials

Nereid Biomaterials is pioneering the development of living materials for marine applications. Through inclusion of natural marine microbes in our biomaterials, accelerated degradation begins upon triggered exposure to seawater on the user’s timeline.

Applications

Our biomaterial has been tested in ocean sensors and fishing traps, and we are seeking partners with which to prototype other ocean gear. Designed for easy use in 3D printing or injection molding, our biomaterial is amenable to current manufacturing practices.

Beneficial Base

We currently partner with Mango Materials for our base polymer. Mango Material is pioneering bacterial synthesis of PHB from waste methane, a detrimental greenhouse gas.
